Gravel Calculator — Estimate Cubic Yards & Volume

Enter your project dimensions to estimate how much gravel or stone you need.

How to use the gravel calculator

Choose Rectangle and enter length, width, and depth — or choose Known Area if you already know the square footage. Pick an extra-material allowance if you want one, then press Calculate.

How the calculation works

Volume is length × width × depth. Depth is converted to feet first, then cubic feet are divided by 27 to get cubic yards. Extra material multiplies the calculated volume by 1 plus the percentage over 100. This is arithmetic on the dimensions you provide — not a construction recommendation.

Cubic feet vs cubic yards

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Suppliers usually sell bulk gravel by the cubic yard and bagged gravel by the cubic foot, so the result shows both.

Why depth changes the result

Volume scales directly with depth: doubling the depth doubles the material. The tool calculates whatever depth you enter — it does not prescribe how deep a driveway, path, or pad should be.

Extra material allowance

An optional allowance is added to the calculated volume. The default is 0%: add extra only if your project needs it.

About weight and tons

Weight and tons estimates depend on the density of the specific material, which varies by stone type. They are not included in this calculator.
